IQNA – The Holy Quran, in Surah Muhammad (PBUH), mentions four rivers in paradise in which clear water, milk, Sharaban Tahur (wine that does not intoxicate), and pure honey flow.

Rivers of Paradise

In other chapters of the Quran like Surah Al-Insan, Surah Ar-Rahman, and Surah Ad-Dukhan, there are also references to different types of springs in paradise.

The Quran refers to Jannat (plural of Jannah) highlighting the existence of numerous gardens and Anhar (plural of Nahr) highlighting the existence of various rivers in paradise.

But in Surah Muhammad, Verse 15, it describes paradise by highlighting four specific rivers:

“The example of the Paradise which the cautious have been promised in it, there are rivers of unstaling water, and rivers of milk that never change in flavor, and rivers of wine, delectable to the drinkers, and rivers of pure, filtered honey.”

The water, milk, wine and honey in these rivers are different from those in earth. The water is free from any pollution or elements that change the taste, smell or color. The milk is also such that its taste, flavor and aroma do not change. The honey is pure, filtered and clear.

As for the wine, there are clarifications in other chapters. According to Verse 47 of Surah Saffat, “there is neither sickness in it, nor intoxication.” And in Verse 19 of Surah Al-Waqi’ah, God says it “will not cause them any intoxication or illness.”

The people of paradise will receive this pure wine from God: “Their Lord will provide them with a drink of pure wine.” (Verse 21 of Surah Al-Insan)

So that wine is not only Tahir (pure) but also purifying.
